Big Data and Sharing of Data for Data Analytics Seminar and End of Year Celebration

  • 05 Dec 2012
  • 18:00
  • Gilbert + Tobin

Join us for a presentation by Peter Leonard, Partner at Gilbert + Tobin Lawyers, on big data and the sharing of data, to be followed by the end of year celebration for the Society.

Companies are awash with data, some generated by their customers or systems, some by third parties.  Data retention is growing so fast – by about 2.5 billion gigabytes a day - that 90 per cent of the stored data in the world today has been created in just the past two years.

One of the key challenges of this age is reconciling the benefits that can be derived from big data analytics, location based services, and cloud computing and ‘anywhere, anytime’ applications with the legitimate concerns of individuals about access to and use of their personal information.  The challenge will become even greater as more standardised data management facilitates matching of anonymised data sets across organisations and as the internet becomes dominated by machine to machine applications.

The challenge in reconciling benefits with potential intrusion is immediate for government and business seeking to reduce transactional costs and derive efficiencies.  This seminar will explore that challenge and how government and businesses are responding to it within the bounds of consumer advocate expectations as to transparency and disclosure and a range of privacy and data protection laws.  The seminar will focus of analysis will be upon the structuring of commercial ventures in this new space to reconcile commercial benefits of data analytics with consumer and privacy advocate concerns as to potential intrusions or privacy and growth in surveillance.

We hope you can join us for the seminar, to be followed by end-of-year celebration drinks.
